Harman Technology unveils a groundbreaking addition to analogue photography with Harman Phoenix 200, the latest colour film in the world.
HARMAN Technology Ltd, a global leader in the production of analogue photographic films, darkroom papers, and photo chemicals, proudly introduces HARMAN Phoenix 200, an innovative limited-edition ISO 200, 35mm colour film. Breaking new ground in analogue photography, this marks the first-ever colour film crafted entirely from emulsion to cassette at the renowned Mobberley factory.
Known for its expertise in black & white films, HARMAN technology embarked on a daring venture to explore the possibilities of colour film production. Philip Ong, Country Manager of Srishti Digital Life Malaysia, the distributor of Harman Phoenix, expressed his delight, stating, “We always believed this wasn’t feasible, but I’m delighted to say we were wrong!”
Initiating a covert ‘skunk works’ project in late 2022, a dedicated team at HARMAN’s UK site in Mobberley, Cheshire, took on the challenge to design, coat, and manufacture a colour film. Philip further notes, “It was initially an experiment to explore what was possible, but what we achieved in such a short space of time is quite remarkable.”
The outcome is the groundbreaking HARMAN Phoenix, an ISO 200 colour negative film characterized by its unmistakably analogue look. Delivering high-contrast images with visible grain and punchy, vibrant colours, this 36-exposure DX-coded cassette can be rated between ISO 100 and 400. While it performs best at ISO 200 in good, consistent light, it also introduces the intriguing possibility of halation.
Philip Ong emphasizes that HARMAN Phoenix stands out as a unique offering in the colour film market. Acknowledging its imperfections as their inaugural colour film, Srishti Digi Life Sdn Bhd, the distributor, recognizes the fervent desire within the film community for diversity in colour options and assures enthusiasts that they are listening.
The unveiling of HARMAN Phoenix comes amid substantial investments by HARMAN technology, underscoring their unwavering commitment to the future of analogue photography. Philip states, “This is just the beginning of HARMAN’s colour journey. Sales from this film will allow us to further invest, refine, and improve our formulations, coating capabilities, and colour technology. Our aim is that each new colour film we produce is an improvement on the previous.”
